چکیده

The interaction in turbulent boundary layers between very large scale motions centered nominally in the log region (termed superstructures) and the small scale motions is investigated across the boundary layer. This analysis is performed using tools based on Hilbert transforms. The results, across a large Reynolds number range, show that in addition to the large-scale log region structures superimposing a footprint (or mean shift) on to the near-wall fluctuations, the small-scale structures are also subject to a high degree of amplitude modulation due to the large structures. The amplitude modulation effect is seen to become progressively stronger as the Reynolds number increases.

Turbulent Drag Reduction by Spanwise Wall Oscillations

The objective of this paper is to examine the effectiveness of wall oscillation as a control scheme of drag reduction. Two flow configurations are considered: constant flow rate and constant mean pressure gradient. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved using Fourier-Chebyshev spectral methods and the oscillation in sinusoidal form is enforced on the walls through boundary conditions for the sp...

Large-scale influences in near-wall turbulence.

Hot-wire data acquired in a high Reynolds number facility are used to illustrate the need for adequate scale separation when considering the coherent structure in wall-bounded turbulence. It is found that a large-scale motion in the log region becomes increasingly comparable in energy to the near-wall cycle as the Reynolds number increases. Through decomposition of fluctuating velocity signals,...

High Reynolds number effects in wall turbulence

A review of recent discoveries from high Reynolds number studies of turbulent boundary layers is given. The emergent regime of very large-scale structures in the logarithmic region and their subsequent influence on the near-wall cycle challenges many of the previously held assumptions regarding scaling of turbulent boundary layers at high Reynolds numbers. Experimental results are presented to ...

XXII ICTAM, 25–29 August 2008, Adelaide, Australia ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LARGE- AND SMALL-SCALE MOTIONS IN TURBULENT BOUNDARY LAYERS

The relationship between largeand small-scale motions remains a poorly understood process in wall-bounded turbulence. Investigation performed by Hutchins and Marusic [3] in a high Reynolds number turbulent boundary layer has recently revealed a possible influence of large-scale log region motions on the small-scale near-wall cycle, akin to a pure amplitude modulation. For this study we build up...

Investigation of flow and heat transfer of nanofluid in a diverging sinusoidal channel

Using of nanofluids and ducts with corrugated walls are both supposed to enhance heat transfer, by increasing the heat transfer fluid conductivity and the heat transfer area respectively. Use of a diverging duct with a jet at inlet section may further increase heat transfer by creating recirculation zones inside the duct. In this work two-dimensional incompressible laminar flow of a nanofluid e...
